Ayurveda meets Spirituality – #3 The Real Buttermilk
I am excited to share today’s beautiful story that my teacher used to always quote about how extremely special buttermilk is.
Once a great rishi known as Bharadvaj muni visited Indra – the king of Svarga loka/heaven. In those times the rishis were very powerful and could literally travel across the different universes. Indra was absorbed watching the apsaras or the celestial nymphs doing a beautiful dance and music presentation. Although the presentation itself was very fascinating, as soon as Bharadwaj muni entered, the beauty and glow that the rishi radiated got everyone captivated. Indra was so captivated that he asked the muni, what is it that brings this captivating glow! Bharadwaj muni said that there is one extremely special food that is available on the earth which is not available in the heavens and that is “Takra” or the real buttermilk! Such is the glory of buttermilk! So let’s find out which buttermilk is he talking about in the context of today’s world.
Last week, I shared the process of making your own liquid gold: Ghee. Among these multiple critical steps to make the ghee, the churning of cream that results into formation of butter and buttermilk is truly magical. Even when kids observe this for the first time they get mesmerized! This buttermilk is originally known as “Takra” or the real buttermilk, also known as ‘nectar on the earth’. This buttermilk is very rich in highly intelligent & friendly bacteria that are usually found in our gut. We all are familiar with the famous quotes: Health begins in the gut and Gut is the brain of the brain. A lot of digestive and brain functions depend on the quality and quantity of these friendly bacteria, such as:
– helps optimum digestive process by supporting absorption, assimilation and elimination
– improves circulation
– supports production of many important neurotransmitters
– aids fat metabolism
– balances cholesterol
– supports weight management
Do try making this buttermilk and derive the wonderful benefits for your health.
